As you walk up the picturesque lane from the beach you arrive at the tranquil setting for The Woodlands and are warmly greeted by your host. We found the rooms warm and cosy, the bar just what you needed after 10mile walk, and the breakfast for the next days walking excellent. Would we come and stay again without walking the Cleveland Way, yes.

What a magical spot! The Woodlands Hotel is tucked away in a quiet part of Sandsend, nestled in trees and hills and fields. We had the family room and loved the views of ducks and chickens and squirrels and wild birds - and if you press your head against one of the windows and look left you can even see the sea! (Does that count as a sea view room? I’m saying yes). It was a lovely light room with lots of windows, a shower room with a huge shower, tea and coffee facility with fresh milk provided (a small thing but makes such a difference). Breakfast was delicious. The owners were lovely and very welcoming to our 5 year old. We loved this place - would highly recommend.

A beautiful b and b and the hosts are so friendly and welcoming to guests, it’s the only place I would stay in Whitby or Sandsend, a fab place in an ideal location and so dog friendly, even at Breakfast..

Had a fantastic weekend at the woodlands. We stayed in room one which had a lovely big window looking out over the woods. Rosie and Darryl are fantastic hosts and made us (and our pooch!) feel very welcome. It is great to find somewhere that is genuinely dog friendly and has no restrictions on where your dog can go - he was even given his own sausage for breakfast! The brekkie was delicious and there were plenty of veggie and vegan options. The location is fantastic - walks to the beach and the woods from the door, so you can stay here without needing to drive anywhere. Also has an on site bar with very reasonably priced drinks. We hope to visit again.

We've just returned from a relaxing stay at The Woodlands Hotel in Sandsend. Set in beautiful gardens and woodland, surrounded by nature was just what we needed. Our room was immaculately clean, with fresh, crisp bed linen, fluffy towels and toiletries, a coffee machine and a fridge with fresh milk and water. We had stunning views of the grounds from both sides of our bedroom and the bathroom.
Our Hosts, Rosie and Daryl, welcomed us on arrival and recommended the nearby cafes and restaurants. You were spoilt for choice at Breakfast and could choose from; fresh fruits, yoghurts, cereals, homemade preserves, and a traditional Yorkshire Breakfast with locally-sourced ingredients. Even being Gluten Free was not a problem, and we were more than satisfied when leaving the table.
The sandy beaches, cafes, pubs and restaurants are all within walking distance. Whitby, Runswick Bay, and the North York Moors are all a short bus ride or drive away. We love this part of the world and can't recommend Rosie and Daryl's warm welcome and hospitality enough. They are passionate about delivering excellent customer service, and we think they have got it spot on!
We couldn't complete our review without mentioning the other dynamic member of The Woodlands team, the very handsome, friendly and sociable Jimmy! He's part of the family, makes you very welcome, and if you're lucky, he'll let you tickle his belly. Did we mention he's a Patterdale? And a gorgeous one at that!

The Woodlands Hotel at Sandsend is a gem of a small hotel tucked away in the quietest part of the village. We were made to feel very welcome by the owners Rosie and Daryl. The building used to be the vicarage and is situated between the tiny village church and old school house. There is ample parking on site and the beach is within easy walking distance. Our bedroom was very comfortable with good quality bed linen. The ensuite was reached via a spiral staircase and had a large free standing bath tub. The local seaweed bath salts was a nice touch. The hotel has a pleasant bar with draft beer and a wide selection of gins including the local favourite Whitby Gin. The hosts were more than happy to make recommendations for local places to visit and there's a good selection of tourist information in the hotel reception. The breakfast was extensive and freshly prepared for each guest. Rosie's chickens provide fabulous fresh eggs!
Sandsend is not far to walk from its larger and much busier neighbour Whitby. Sandsend village has cafes, 2 pubs and a couple of nice restaurants; Estbek House and The Fish Cottage both of whom serve excellent local seafood. The beach is massive at low tide and there is a Lifeguard in the spring/summer season.

The owners were really welcoming, they allowed my 2 children to feed their chickens and let them collect their own egg for breakfast the next day. The room was clean and comfortable, there was a lot of garden for my 8 month lab to explore and they were really accommodating with her and said she was allowed to come to breakfast with us. It is a stone's throw away from the beach and has a lovely walk down there with a lake. The breakfast was lovely, well cooked full English, lovely overnight oats and smoothies. I was happy to hear that they are trying to be eco friendly and have made efforts to remove single use plastics from their hotel. They have recycled place mats at the dinner table and they were bought from the RNLI, so it was nice that they support charities and do their part for the environment. It was a pleasure to stay there, it was really peaceful and calm. I will definitely be returning.

Just got home today after staying 6 nights at the Woodlands Hotel, in my favourite place Sandsend. I was a little apprehensive about staying in a hotel as a solo traveller with my dog, however needn’t have worried. Rosie & Daryl were friendly and welcoming from the outset and nothing was too much trouble. Hotel and grounds are beautiful- really well kept and such a stunning location. Room was clean, warm and well equipped with a fabulous view of the garden and surrounding woods. Breakfast was beautifully presented and very tasty. The bar was always open for a much deserved glass of wine or two after a day out exploring. Weather was superb and my hosts full of ideas of where to go and what to do. I would certainly recommend the Woodlands Hotel to anyone looking to stay in Sandsend- you will have a fabulous time. Molly 🐶 and I will be back! Sharon.

My wife and I have had a really relaxing stay at the Woodlands Hotel. We like walking and the coast walk from Sandsend to Runswick Bay is beautiful, just be mindful there are very steep steps in places. This is the view from our room, their eggs are included in breakfast!

The Breakfast was amazing, cooked to perfection and we even got to enjoy a Poached egg from one of the chuck's in the Gardens 😋
We also brought along our 12 year old Springer Spaniel, who also enjoyed her stay and was even allowed to join us at breakfast, so very dog Friendly! 🐕

Lovely location, perfect hosts full of local knowledge and very friendly . The breakfast was excellent, we stayed in the room with the spiral staircase this would not suit everyone but we liked the quirky style . The bath was lovely although some noisy plumbing . That was not an issue everything else far outweighed the little snags 😊
